When people choose a cremation without a service — often called a pure cremation or direct cremation — it is usually because they want something simple, affordable, and straightforward. What many families don’t realise, however, is that not all pure cremations are the same. Behind the low prices sometimes advertised nationally, there can be hidden compromises in care, transparency, and dignity. At Hadaway & Denton — your independent funeral directors in Ashford — we believe that simplicity should never come at the expense of compassion. In this post, we explain what a pure cremation really is, what makes ours different, how we compare to national providers, and why even the most straightforward funeral can be carried out with care and respect.
What Is a Pure or Direct Cremation?
A pure cremation, sometimes called a direct cremation, is one of the simplest ways of laying someone to rest. In practical terms, it means there is no formal funeral service before the cremation takes place. Instead, the person who has died is collected, cared for, and cremated quietly, without family or friends present at that stage. Afterwards, the ashes can either be returned to the family or arranged to be scattered or interred at a later time, perhaps during a memorial or private gathering.
Families choose this option for many reasons. Some prefer privacy or do not want the formality of a traditional funeral. Others appreciate the lower cost compared to more elaborate arrangements, while still having the opportunity to hold a personal memorial in their own way and at their own time. Whatever the reason, it is important to remember that not all pure cremations are carried out in the same way. The level of care, transparency of pricing, and compassion shown to families can vary widely from one provider to another.
Our Pure / Direct Service
At Hadaway & Denton, our Pure / Direct service is exactly what it says — a simple, straightforward option, carried out properly with care and respect. Our Pure service is an all-inclusive package that covers aspects many “cheaper” national providers do not. We collect the deceased during office hours from a hospital, hospice, care home, or private home, with no additional charge for the location. They are then cared for in our private mortuary here in Ashford, ensuring they remain local rather than being transported to distant hubs, as is often the case with some national firms.
Arrangements can be made in our office, at your home, or over the phone, and we handle all administration and legal paperwork on your behalf. On the day of cremation at Charing Crematorium, our professional staff and a suitable funeral vehicle attend, with the additional option of using one of our ceremonial hearses if preferred. A simple coffin is provided, and all disbursements (third-party costs) are included in the price.
We also offer choices without hidden fees. Families may visit our chapel of rest, select clothing or gowns, and decide how and when ashes are returned — either delivered or collected. Everything is fully transparent, so you can be confident in what is included. For up-to-date pricing and full details of the service, please visit our
Pure / Direct service page.
How Our Pure Cremation Compares to Other Providers
As highlighted in the comparison table below, the differences between our service and that of national providers are significant. While some companies advertise lower prices, these figures often do not reflect the full cost. Extras such as collecting the deceased from a care home or hospice, delivering ashes, or providing an opportunity for a final goodbye can quickly increase the total price.
Another key difference is the level of care. Many national pure cremation firms operate from centralised hubs, meaning the deceased may be transported many miles away from their local area. Families are often unaware of this, which can be distressing. By contrast, our service ensures the deceased remains in Ashford, cared for in our own private mortuary by staff who live and work in the same community.
Transparency is another important distinction. With us, the price you see is the price you pay for the service described. We don’t rely on hidden fees or unexpected charges. Families deserve clarity, particularly at such an emotional time, and this honesty sets us apart from larger providers.
